First Plein Air

Bastrop Recreational Park
9″ x 12″ oil on board

In the tradition of Plein Air painting, I decided it was time to step outside the studio to jump back into painting. For a long time, I have felt that my skills as an artist have developed consistently, but my understanding of those skills have not. The one area where I feel I still need great improvement is color, more specifically a grasp for how color acts in nature. So what better way to experience that then to go to nature.

Here is my first ever attempt at an oil painting outdoors. It’s nothing to get too excited about as a final piece, but it was an exhilarating experience. After posting up next to a river here in Bastrop, I had a plethora of ambient sounds to enjoy: the whispering of the water, the birds, spectators enjoying the scenery, and the raspy screams coming from the group of geese. They are very intimidating creatures when you get too close.
I believe Long (my new Plein Air buddy) and I were outside for about 3-4 hours. A slight misjudgment by both of us left us standing in almost triple digit heat, just a few steps away from the cooler shade offered by the numerous trees. I have already learned from this experience. I also know that I need smaller brushes! More to come.

Homemade Panels

I’ve decided it’s time to move past the cheap and unreliable materials that I have been using since college. I needed to get some panels for the kitchen paintings I am starting. So, instead of buying them I made twelve 9″ x 12″ wood panels using a good quality plywood. I applied a traditional gesso using Gamblin’s version. The surface is very different than I am used to. My only experience painting on panel was very frustrating. I must have applied too few coats of acrylic gesso because my paint just got sucked into the wood. On top of that, I was using economy paints which lacks a good amount of pigment.
This time around, if anything, I’d say it’s too smooth. The paint slides right on. I hope this change of materials leads me to build what I can and use the extra money on things I can’t produce.

Final 2

I’ve settled on 4 final compositions for the final paintings. I’m pretty sure at this point that I will omit the figures. I’ve been wanting to strengthen my backgrounds and alter them in a way that’s reminiscent of romantic landscapes, so this will be a good first step in that direction. I’m starting to get the hang of charcoal after working in graphite for so long.

Small Works

I’m going to show some small paintings at Artist’s House Gallery in Philadelphia during December, so I thought I would post images of two preliminary drawings.
I’m still working some issues out like whether or not to add figures since that was my original concept. However, I’m concerned they would be overwhelmed by the objects and feel forced. Plus I still have to find models and decide poses. Decisions, decisions.
Both are charcoal and chalk on toned 10″ x 12″ paper. My goal is to have 5-6 finished pieces.

Brown pen and ink sketch

Well, I am now at home in Bastrop, TX and have a nice little studio to work. The move was very tough, but the drive was fantastic. We stayed in Amish country the first night, and I was lucky enough to see nature put on a wonderful fireworks display made up of fireflies. That will be a nice memory. We even got to stop at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Falling Water on the way which was beautiful. I went from 75 degree weather to 103 heat. Nothing like being back in Texas.
Anyway, back to work, and there is plenty of work to be done. I posted a sketch for an upcoming painting. This particular sketch is inspired by some old prints I saw at the Blanton Museum in Austin last weekend.

Andre WIP

Soon I’ll be taking a little hiatus to move back to Austin, TX and get settled in. In the meantime, here is the “work in progress” of Andre and the Toaster.

Final

Here are the final 3 shots of the WIP of Incandescent. The last one is the only one which has been cleaned up in Photoshop.

Inspiration

I’ve noticed, since showing my work, that people are comparing it with various memories of their own. It made me think back to how I started this series and where I drew the inspiration from. The main idea came from the 1957 movie The Incredible Shrinking Man, but I wanted to list some other works that I, either consciously or unconsciously, had in my mind.
  • Gulliver’s Travels (specifically the Lilliputians)
  • Honey I Shrunk the Kids
  • Mickey and the Beanstalk (one of my childhood favorites, adaptation of the classic story)
  • Alice in Wonderland
  • Smurfs (my old bedroom wallpaper)
  • Fraggle Rock
  • Muppet Babies
  • Magic School Bus

Nostalgia plays such a big role in my work, and I hope I am able to remind others of their favorite childhood memories. Thanks to the person who brought to my attention the old show Land of the Giants.

If you can think of any other comparisons to my work, I would love to hear them!

This is definitely the most detailed drawing to date for me. Didn’t feel labor intensive though, so I’m thinking I will continue to keep up the level of detail for the next few.
After receiving a few comments I was surprised to realize how many different textures I had included in the piece. Didn’t even notice, although I did feel a lapse of sanity while working on the loufa!
I’m having a hard time thinking of a decent title for this one. Any suggestions?
